In this story, Joyce uses a descriptive language in the first person to bring to light the struggles of the young boy especially as he struggles to initiate a love relationship with a young lady described as Mangans sister in this piece of work. The story describes the life of the young boy during a period of winter detailing on his play with other children, his enthusiasm to start a love life with Mangans sister, and his relationship with his uncle and auntie.Although this story appears to focus on the life of a young boy, this story appears to be symbolic of the life at North Richmond Street, a place that was marked by silence and the only noise came from boys who schooled at Christian Brothers institutions (107). Just like the young boy is growing to adu lthood under challenges, this place is facing the same challenges during its growth process. For instance, the young boy suffers frustration when he promises to buy gift for Mangans sister when after visiting Bazaar, a promise that never comes to pass because his uncle comes home late only for him to find most stalls in Bazaar already closed (111).
